Infantry are created in blocs of 9 to 16, which can adopt a variety of formations based on sepcial abilities. For instance, units in phalanx/battle line formation deal added damage faster at the cost of mobility, while cavalry can "charge" where their melee attack and speed will be boosted for a brief while.

Types of formation

  • Loose formation - no bonuses.
  • Line of battle formation - more damage, at the cost of mobility.
  • Square formation - more damage versus cavalry, but take more damage from ranged weapons (infantry only).
  • Wedge formation (melee only) - more damage and speed, but take more damage from melee weapons.

Units need time between switching formations. Research should allow for a reduction in time for units. Units that are seriously damanged should not be allwed to be able to use formations, if they are sufficiently damaged they will automatically go into loose formation.
